Julian Rhodes reckons City are two players away from finalising their plans for the League One push.

Midfielders Jason Kennedy and Mark Yeates have been added to the promotion-winning squad so far.

Phil Parkinson is now looking to bring in another goalkeeper to challenge Jon McLaughlin and a back-up right winger.

He is currently casting an eye over former Sheffield Wednesday wideman Jon-Paul McGovern following his release by League One rivals Carlisle.

Joint-chairman Rhodes said: “The key was retaining a few of the players that were out of contract last season to keep the momentum going and the great spirit that they had.

“There have been a lot of targets on and off throughout the summer. Some have gone but we have signed a couple.

“Phil hasn’t finished. I think he’s got another two he wants to add.

“At what point I’m not so sure – it might be after the season’s started – but I would imagine, knowing Phil, it will probably be before.

“One will be a goalkeeper because we’ve only got Jon. I would imagine the other is on the right wing, which is one area where we are a little bit light.

“We’ve got Garry Thompson and Yeates can also play there but I think he’s predominantly a left-sided player.

“That’s why Phil’s had Jon-Paul McGovern in and been looking at one or two others.”

Scotsman McGovern, who also played for Swindon and MK Dons, was a regular with Greg Abbott’s Carlisle last season but was one of the experienced faces cleared out in the summer as part of a squad shake-up.

City are also targeting a second keeper to fill the void left by Matt Duke. Lee Butler arrived on Monday to take over the coaching role and Parkinson is currently assessing their playing options.

The keeper currently training with them is rumoured to be Dimi Konstantopoulos.

The 35-year-old has most recently been playing for AEK Athens in Greece but is better known for his spell with Hartlepool.

Rhodes added: “Two more signings and I think the squad would be complete. As I’ve said before, we don’t want to bring in loans.

“The idea is we’ve got cover in every single position so if we have any injuries, should be okay.

“I wouldn’t rule out that Phil might want to change personnel but that will be done on a one-in, one-out basis.”
