Haworth’s Will Whiteoak suffered a 19th-hole defeat to county team-mate Jamie Bower, of Meltham, in the quarter-finals of the Yorkshire Amateur Championship at Huddersfield.
The Bingley St Ives member had reached the last eight with wins over the host club’s Charles Webb (4&2) and another fellow Yorkshire player, Paul Lockwood, from Hessle (2&1). Whiteoak qualified for the matchplay stages with two rounds of 74.
Malton & Norton’s Chris Halley was crowned Yorkshire champion after beating former Otley member Ben Sardo, who plays out of Moor Allerton, 4&2 in the final.
Halley overcame Howley Hall’s Ben Hutchinson by two holes in the semi-finals.
Hutchinson had earlier come through two mammoth tussles, beating Woodsome Hall’s Matthew Colcombe on the 19th and Bedale’s Daniel Brown on the 22nd hole.
Colcombe won the Alvin Trophy – which Whiteoak took last year – for the best gross score in qualifying with rounds of 70 and 66.
Cleckheaton’s Nigel Colbeck made it through the strokeplay stage but lost 6&5 to Brown in the first round.
