Gus Poyet believes he will return to Leeds “one day” as he prepares for a visit with Brighton.

Poyet, assistant manager to Dennis Wise at Elland Road, is back in West Yorkshire tomorrow with the promotion-chasing Seagulls.

The Uruguayan was thought to be on the short-list of candidates for the hot-seat when Neil Warnock was sacked four weeks ago. And he has hinted that his relationship with the Leeds’ fans could prove a powerful attraction for him rejoining the club in the future.

Poyet said: “It’s a great place. I love that place and I will probably go back one day because I enjoyed my time there so much. The relationship without being in charge was so powerful with the fans that I am sure I will have the opportunity to go to Leeds sooner or later.”

While Leeds have only pride to play for in their final home game of the campaign, Brighton are hoping to rubberstamp their place in the play-offs.

Brian McDermott, who suffered his first defeat as Whites boss at Birmingham last week, is now concentrating on his planning for next season.

Motherwell winger Chris Humphrey is the latest player to be linked with a summer move. The Leeds boss will not be drawn on the extent of the rebuild he feels is needed.

McDermott said: “I just think we need to do whatever we have to do. If we can add good quality players who know this division and know what’s required, then that by definition will strengthen what we’ve got now.”
