Bradford City request for early postponement because of weather

City have asked the Football League for permission to postpone tomorrow's home game against Bristol Rovers 24 hours early.

With heavy snow hitting the district - and more on the way - there is little chance of the match going ahead.

The pitch itself is covered but the biggest concerns are the large amounts of snow that have drifted into the stands and the conditions of the approach roads to Valley Parade.

A City spokesman said: "With the heavy snow being forecast for the next 24 hours, an early request to postpone the game has been made to the Football League.

"As an added precaution, Bristol Rovers have been advised to delay their departure."

A fair request, especially given the distance the Bristol fans would have to travel. Remember our Wycombe away game!

It isn't rubbish - half the time games are called off at VP because of the area around the ground. Its not frozen, so
if they need help to clear around the stadium they could get the volunteers in, though admittedly one thing that can't be helped is the ridiculous overly cautious driving standards that people adopt at the first sign of snow.

Why is it when snow arrives everything comes to a stop go back to the 70s far worse weather conditions for football no heated pitches but snow was cleared by supporters and most games went ahead now it is not the pitch that is the problem it is the lack of salt and sand on the roads and paths that are creating the issues now
So come on bradford council do your bit and this game would have been played.

BBC Sport has it down on the fixture list as postponed. Smart call really, this snow isn't lloking like going anywhere anytime soon.

Maybe we could play Tuesday - Friday again next week, we've been made to do a Wednesday - Saturday before over Christmas, it's no different.

Lets hope that when we eventually play Bristol Rovers their form has dropped off a little. Since the start of Jan they have played 16 games, won 10 -beating the likes of Port Vale, Exeter, Burton, Fleetwood, Rotherham and Oxford. Drawn 2 -both away games, one at Cheltenham. Of the 4 games they have lost in the last 16 played, 3 of the 4 were to highly placed teams such as Rotherham, Gillingham and Northampton.

Rotten timing to loose this game to the weather. After Tues result we NEEDED to play this game and get the 'roll on' effect of the Wycombe game. Now that momentum is stalled until the Sarfend game next Fri. It seems the pitch IS playable and 'spectator safety' is the call off reason ?. H&S gone nuts again I am pretty sure the vast majority of fans could very easily make their way to, into and away from the ground without compromising their safety !.

Its an 'opportunity missed' and we might look back and say we needed to have played this game whilst the team were 'in the right mood'.

Only good thing is means the likes of Meredith & Ravenhill can get some more fitness time in.

10 day gap then all-out balls to the wall final push (hoping about 30 other results go our way).

A good early decision. They can only rely on predictions. In hindsight it could be wrong. Well done city, the times we have had last minute postponements only upsets everyone.

I make my living out of Health and Safety and I am not clear what the safety concerns are. The pitch is playable and there’s nothing on the stands that a few (hundred) fans with shovels and a little salt could not deal with. I drove to North Yorkshire this morning a journey which took 2 hours thanks to a jack knifed wagon in the runway tunnels – the same return journey took 45 mins tonight so difficult but not impossible for the Bristol fans. So do I think the game should be played? Well look at the pictures on the BCFC web site – as a fan do I fancy sitting there in blizzard conditions tomorrow trying to watch what’s going on on the pitch trough a snow storm? No Thanks! So a good call in my view but please don’t use H&S as an excuse.

So yesterday I said I thought we could clear the stands, and Bristol fans could get here if careful. This morning not so sure. Calling the game off early looking a better decision all the time.
