Brighouse Town go into the weekend astride the summit of the Baris Northern Counties East League Premier Division table and looking forward to the season’s finale.

They will also be hoping that the weather picks up. Their two rivals for the title, and with it the only promotion place to the Evo-Stik League, have both got rearranged fixtures to slot into their schedule.

Town chairman Ray McLaughlin said: “Barring any postponements, we only have Saturday games now. There are eight left, five away and three at home, but they are all weekend games, so I suppose you could argue we have the best run-in.

“I wouldn’t say easiest because all of the games for all of the clubs chasing promotion will be difficult from here on in. Suddenly all the teams have something to play for, even if it’s just pride against a local rival above them in the table.”

Brighouse’s two nearest neighbours, Liversedge and Thackley, were both left kicking their heels after having home games called off last weekend.

There were eight postponements from 12 scheduled Tuesday games featuring NCE League clubs, so Town have escaped any call-offs just recently and wish that to continue.

McLoughlin said: “Last Saturday was a bad one locally and if we had been at home we would have been off. Our reserve game against Eccleshill United was postponed.

“(Title rivals) Bridlington Town and Scarborough Athletic both have midweek games to come and that makes it more difficult for them. They also have each other to play, so someone is going to drop points there.

“We still have Scarborough to play, so we just want to keep matching them for points until that game. It might not be a title decider but it should be a great atmosphere and a cracking game.”
