Bradford City poised to challenge FIFA ruling over Mark Stewart
6:30pm Thursday 7th February 2013 in Sport
By Simon Parker, Bradford City Reporter
Mark Stewart, who failed to score in 15 appearances in England last season, could cost Bradford City 250,000 euros in compensation to Falkirk
City are expected to appeal after being hit with a shock £215,000 compensation bill from FIFA for Mark Stewart.
They have ten days to decide whether to fight the decision, which was announced today. Otherwise they must pay Stewart’s former side Falkirk 250,000 Euros within a month.
Director of operations David Baldwin said: “We’ve received confirmation of the ruling. We are now in discussions with our lawyers before deciding what position we will take.”
City have constantly maintained that they did not owe the Scottish club anything for the striker, who signed on a free transfer but failed to score in 15 appearances in England last season.
But Falkirk claimed they were owed investment costs after bringing Stewart up through their academy and took the case to football’s governing body 11 months ago.
The dispute centred on when the different seasons end in the two countries. City claimed that as Stewart had just turned 23 when he joined them in the summer of 2011, they were no longer eligible to pay for his development.
Stewart was signed by Peter Jackson on the recommendation of the club’s former head of development Archie Christie. But his only goal was in a penalty shoot-out at Huddersfield.
He broke his foot early on and never managed to secure a regular spot once Phil Parkinson took over.
Stewart returned to Scotland on loan with Hamilton before joining Dundee this season.
Falkirk chairman Martin Ritchie said: “We’ve always believe we had a strong case but it’s taken a lot of hard work from people in and around the club to get this result.
“And of course financially it’s a tremendous boost.”
Should City be forced to cough up, the loss will be minimised by the money raised from reaching the Capital One Cup final.
They are also receiving regular add-ons from Premier League clubs for the development of former home-grown youngsters such as Andre Wisdom and George Green.

I always said he was a clown before, during and after his spell as manager. This and what PP has done with the team since just confirms that point!
Jackson should be made to pay the £215K out of his circus fees.........

Jacko was a clown and what is happening down at VP now just goes to prove what a bad manager he was. The reason I stopped posting on here was due to all the Jacko lovers who were totally clueless and could not see his inability to manage a football team. Well, it looks like half of you are still on here thinking that Jacko should not be blamed for anything.......

If Stewart had been under contract, Falkirk would've accepted a fee that was only a fraction of that; I bet they can't believe their luck, and our absolutely wetting themselves. So you are telling me that it is now cheaper to sign a player that is under contract, rather than one who's has expired; absolutely crazy.
If it had happened to a club like Wimbledon, tell me how they would've managed to pay the amount in 30 days; it would absolutely bankrupt them. It just shows how out of touch with the modern game they are.
Just how did we get bureaucrats like this running our game, or should I say ruining our game.

If they spend the same amount training up every player, why are they not one of the main contenders in Scotland?
If this is correct, then their youth team (which would probably be around 15-16 players) costs around £3.22m-£3.44m to run!! I cannot believe that in a million years!
If we managed to offer 2 of their first team players higher contracts than they could when we were skint with a seasons budget of around £1m, then there finances need investigating by FIFA!!! How can they justify this!?!?
SCAMOLA!!!
We've got to fight this all the way!!

Where the hell do they get that figure from? Those sums of money just don't normally exist in this division!
FIFA have taken a look at us, seen we've made a bit of brass this year and taken the absolute proverbial because of it.
Had we had no money at all, this figure wouldn't have been this high.

If this is the case, might it also have implications as far as any settlement is concerned? I think this could prove hugely relevant to any settlement fee.

This smacks of FIFA recognising that City for the first time in 12 years would actually be able to pay that amount. They should focus on match fixing and racism instead.

Forget which manager or accomplice signed him or the lack of homework done before acquiring his signature, this is a 4th Tier team that has signed a player from a Scottish minnow on a free transfer.
FIFA have had plenty of time to evaluate the player since he left the club a year ago and he has hardly gone on to great things.
It's not as if we made a fortune on the back of snaring him from Falkirk, he was a flop and has since continued to be so after being released early from his two year contract.
When FIFA then evaluate him based on that and the fact that 4th Division teams barely have a penny to spare and are constantly struggling to survive - how the hell did these bafoons with their Financial Fair Play proposals hanging out of their pockets - decide that an amateur footballer was worth a quarter of a million pounds?
Some geek please help me figure out, the average cost of a 4th Division player over the past 5 years. In fact, £250k is possibly what Tom Cleverley cost Man Utd from us - nobody seeing a difference?
It should be kick 'FIFA' out of football, those corrupt, good for nothing bureaucrats as they are spoiling our game.
No doubt, the person or persons that decided this outcome is/are receiving a cut for this decision which was undoubtedly because of our cup run.
We should fight this all the way and sue FIFA too for discrimination. I wonder how much they would have ordered Portsmouth of Barnet, had they signed him - you can't base decisions on status, wealth or anything that separates one team from the next - There's no way the guy was worth, or even cost Falkirk anything near £250k - do you think they spend £5m bringing 20 players through their youth team? If they do, they'll be competing with the likes of Barcelona in the near future (though not with players of Mark Stewart calibre) - so why are we being handed such a large bill.
If I were on the City board, I'd be hiring private detectives now to follow, tap and rummage through every piece of junk the a-hole (who made this decision) leaves because there's something amiss and it wouldn't take too long to find him out.
That way, we'd be doing our bit to clean up that filthy organisation and we'd have the proof needed to sue them (and him) while we're at it.
Swines.

Our only way out of this is to challenge the date of the end/start of season in Scotland versus that in England as this was what we based our £0 price tag on, he was 23 and unattached.
If that fails then challenge the actual price tag applied by FIFA for a player plying his trade in a pub league and not even making the grade there, one season of scoring does not make him worth £215k in anyone's eyes.
The same could possibly be said about Nahki but I think we can all see the difference.

We were all convinced when Archie and Jacko told us what a great signing he was, although some had misgivings about his injury record.
If only FIFA would look at his current form - I think he has 5 SPL starts this season and has been substituted in most of those matches.
Dundee fans are suggesting they should put him up for sale as surely someone would offer £100K!

Now, City are being lumbered with a 'bigger' amount when, perhaps previously, Falkirk might have settled for a lesser amount, had City 'settled.'
To be honest, if it had been 'the other way around' and Falkirk had taken one of our better players for nothing, most supporters would be screaming 'UNFAIR!' on here!
In hindsight, Mark Stewart, never scored the goals expected, in his (admittedly small number of appearances) but when he arrived he HAD been the top goalscorer in Scottish Division One-so Falkirk certainly lost one of their 'key players. (and Falkirk can't be held responsible for one of their players NOT fitting in after being transferred out-it's always a gamble!)
Before appealing, City might like to find out if the sum could 'increase' should they (City) lose. £215, 000 is bd enough but more ...would be 'worse.'

FIFA :£215000 for 1st division Scottish footballer going to a lower mid 4th division club.
RIDICULOUS all around: how much are Falkirk going to back hand into FIFA. lol.
Fear we may have to pay one way or another. Fight and incur heavy legal fees and still maybe lose or simply let it go and get rid of it out of the system. The charge will be written of against profits this season and will reduce any corporation tax which may arise this financial year, SO IT OT ALL BAD NEWS!!
