Skelmersdale United 2 Guiseley 0

Guiseley’s hopes of reaching Wembley this season were shattered as they suffered a defeat at the hands of a club from two divisions lower down the football pyramid.

High-flying Evo-Stik Division One North outfit Skelmersdale terminated the Lions’ involvement in this season’s FA Trophy with a comfortable second-round home win.

Last season’s quarter-finalists Guiseley have only themselves to blame after being profligate in the first half.

Good chances were created but spurned, the first by Gavin Rothery, who put a 12th-minute effort over the bar.

An Andy Holdsworth free-kick was saved by the home keeper, who did even better when he palmed away Kevin Holsgrove’s well-struck shot, which looked destined for the top corner.

Another Holdsworth free-kick was saved before Josh Wilson fired over and the same player planted a header right at the keeper when a yard either side would surely have given the Lions a half-time lead.

A set-piece just before the hour went off Jack Rea at the far post to give the home side the lead and they made the game safe two minutes from time when Adam Morning netted after a breakaway.
