Bradford Park Avenue Avenue were nomads this week as they wandered around looking for training facilities but, according to manager John Deacey, that is a regular occurrence.

While all semi-pro clubs, and even some full-time outfits in the Conference and lower leagues, were hindered by the sub-zero temperatures, Avenue are used to the have-kit-will-travel approach to weekly training.

Deacey said: “It was a bad week weather-wise, and I’m sure most clubs would have been in the same boat.

“We had to do some work indoors at a gym but I don’t think the players were too put out by that because it was minus three or four outside. It wasn’t ideal preparation though going into a tough game tomorrow at Worcester.

“Our two previous games were postponed, so we would have liked to do a proper training session on Wednesday, which is our last session of the week.

"We will be a bit rusty, and that’s not what we wanted against a Worcester side that I think will still have a real tilt at promotion. Whoever finishes above them will have had a very good season.”

Avenue are actually above tomorrow's hosts - it will be seventh versus fourth at St George’s Lane - but Deacey still insists that his club are punching above their weight.

The manager could not have dreamed his side would be as high as they are after gaining promotion to the Conference North last term.

“I still keep saying to people that if anyone had told me we would be fourth in the table at this stage, I would have thought they were mad!” added the boss.

“We only got promoted last May, and even I can’t believe we have done so well thus far. We are not even halfway through the season though, so no-one here is getting carried away. We are just finding our way really.

“It is the same with training. This week might have been exceptionally cold but it wasn’t exceptional in us looking for somewhere to work.

"We don’t have our own training facilities like a lot of the Blue Square Bet clubs. We have to scrap around and find somewhere. I would love to block book somewhere like GOALS, where we have had the odd training night, but we can’t afford it.

“There is so much going on at Horsfall Stadium that we can’t even train on our own pitch. There is the option of the pitches on the slope above it but I think there is the possibility of injuries if we used that, and with a 16-man squad we just can’t risk it.

“We might be rubbing shoulders with the Halifax Towns, the Chesters, the Guiseleys and the Harrogate Towns in this division at the moment but they have bigger budgets and so better training facilities and bigger squads.”
