Former Park Avenue and Scotland international full back Jimmy Stephen, the only player from either Bradford club to captain his country while playing in the city, has died aged 90.

Stephen was with Avenue for a decade between 1938 and 1948 but was restricted to just over 100 official appearances because of the Second World War.

During his time there, he was picked four times for Scotland in wartime internationals – facing Stanley Matthews in his first game.

Stephen made his ‘proper’ debut in a home international against Wales in October 1946 when he was given the captaincy. No debutant has skippered Scotland since.

Stephen left Bradford for Portsmouth in 1949 for £15,000, a record fee at the time for a player in his position.

In his first season, he was part of the Pompey squad that won the championship but only made one appearance.

Stephen spent six seasons at Fratton Park and then remained on the south coast when he moved into non-league football.

He eventually left the game to become a timber salesman until his retirement.

Stephen was diagnosed with cancer in December. He leaves his first wife Mary, two children and four grandchildren.
