Guiseley 2, Barrow 2

Guiseley made it through to the FA Cup second-round draw but only as an either/or after surrendering a two-goal lead to Barrow at Nethermoor.

The Lions now have a tricky replay at Blue Square Bet Premier outfit Barrow to negotiate if they are to make a first-ever appearance in the second round.

But there is genuine hope of progressing further as the winners will be at home to Barrow’s league rivals Macclesfield Town.

Guiseley relinquished home advantage in their first-round tie against the club from one step higher on the football pyramid.

Yet they made a good start as Andy Holdsworth and Nicky Boshell both had chances before Wayne Brooksby’s 14th-minute opener.

The simple tap in saved the referee from having to make a difficult decision as Danny Boshell’s initial shot appeared to have been intentionally blocked by a Barrow defender’s hand.

The Barrow keeper was busy, denying Nicky Boshell and a Danny Ellis header to Holdsworth’s free-kick, before he was beaten again in the 35th minute.

Once again a shot had been parried, legally this time, but the ball was headed home by a stooping Danny Boshell.

There were two more good Guiseley chances for Kevin Holsgrove, the second of which the Barrow keeper did well with – being faced with a one on one – but the Lions failed to extend their lead and paid the price.

Barrow changed the tie with two goals with the space of four minutes either side of the break.

The visitors’ England C striker Adam Boyes made it 2-1 just before the interval and Garry Hunter latched on to a weak headed back-pass from Mark Bower to beat home keeper Steve Drench to the ball before stabbing it into the net.

Guiseley pushed to get back in front but a combination of near misses and good defending frustrated them.

Holsgrove saw a shot on target following a run through the visitors’ defence saved. Danny Boshell fired just over on the hour mark and then a header from James Walshaw just brushed the post as it went wide.

A later Josh Wilson effort was over the target but the next shot, from Walshaw, was deflected over the bar from close range thanks to a defender putting himself on the line. A last-minute Walshaw shot was then well saved.

Guiseley director and spokesman Stuart Allen said: “We are slightly disappointed after being 2-0 up but we are still in the draw and capable of going up to Barrow and getting a result.

“We made a bit of history because we had never made the second-round draw. We had been in the first round six times before but had always been beaten at that stage.

“It is a little bit of a milestone that we have reached but we need to finish the job off if we are to take our place in that second round.”
