YORKSHIRE’S cricketers were left frustrated this afternoon after rain brought a premature end to their opening match against Gloucestershire in the Royal London One-Day Cup at Scarborough.

Replying to the home side’s barely adequate 227 all out in exactly 50 overs, a total which owed much to a ninth-wicket stand of 57 between Tim Bresnan and Steve Patterson, Gloucestershire’s openers had made just 5-0 off two overs when the weather closed in. Each side took one point from the game.

However, the visitors could argue that the balance of the game favoured them when the rain arrived and Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie was critical of his top order batting at North Marine Road.

“The batting was disappointing,” he said. “Five of our top six got starts and someone needed to go on and get a major score. Our top order have to take responsibility and that’s an area where we must aim to be better in the next game at Derby.

“We could have scored anything if one of those players had gone on but from 151-8, it was a fantastic effort to get to 227.

Analysis of Yorkshire’s innings confirms Gillespie’s honest assessment.

On a wicket offering Michael Klinger’s bowlers plenty of bounce, none of the top six could score more than Glenn Maxwell, whose 33 included three fours and a straight six.

Maxwell was caught off a no-ball, dropped and then legitimately caught in the same James Fuller over and the bowler then castled Jack Leaning first ball to leave Yorkshire on 82-4.

Gary Ballance and Will Rhodes attempted to repair the innings with a fifth-wicket stand of 46 but fine bowling and some careless batting had reduced Yorkshire to 151-8 before Patterson joined Bresnan.

The pair then added those vital 57 runs inside 11 overs and Bresnan went on to make 43 off 55 balls, an innings including three fours and two sixes, before he was caught off the final ball of the innings. The impressive Miles finished with 4-29.
