ADAM O’Brien is determined to establish himself as a regular 80-minute hooker after becoming the latest player to commit himself to the Bulls.

The highly-regarded 21-year-old, who progressed through the ranks at Odsal, has given head coach Jimmy Lowes a major boost by penning a new two-year deal.

O’Brien, who made his debut as a 17-year-old at Huddersfield in March 2011, has played the full 80 minutes in the last three games against Huddersfield, Wigan and Leeds.

With Matt Diskin expected to make an announcement shortly on his future plans, O’Brien looks set to emerge as the Bulls’ main man next season.

He said: “Jimmy has come in and wanted an 80-minute hooker.

“He has given me a chance to perform in the last few weeks and I’ve taken my chance, so now I’ve been offered a new contract to stay for another two years and I’m really happy.

“Hopefully, we can push on now and get back into Super League after a tough year in the Championship. I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”

O’Brien said he had never even considered the prospect of jumping ship after revelling in the added responsibility Lowes has given him.

“Leeds was the third game on the trot where I had played the full 80 minutes,” said O’Brien, who did his scholarship at Wigan before joining Bradford as a 16-year-old.

“It’s been tough and a big learning curve, so I need to get my body used to it, but I’m really enjoying it.

“At the beginning of the year I was only getting the odd 20 minutes here and there but with Disko struggling with injuries, I’ve had more opportunities.

“It’s probably at the back end of the game where I feel it most, but I think the more I do it the more my body will get used to it and be more efficient.

“I don’t know what Disko’s plans are but he has taught me a lot and I’ll never forget that.

“If it’s his time to stop, then hopefully I can push on and be as good as him and Jimmy.

“Having Jimmy as my coach is massive for me. I’ve had coaches who have played in different positions but Jimmy was a hooker and the standard he played at was immense.

“He was a legend at Bradford Bulls and is giving me tips and telling me what he wants from me.

“Hopefully I can push forward now and become one of those Bradford legends like Jimmy was.”

O’Brien said he was delighted to join Lee Gaskell, Dale Ferguson, Tom Olbison and Adam Sidlow in staying loyal to the Bulls after the club’s relegation.

He added: “My focus was always to stay here.

“When we were relegated, the club said they wanted to offer me a contract and I was happy to stay.

“I’ve been here since I was 16 and there was no reason for me to leave. Bradford have given me an opportunity and I’m happy here.”

Head coach Lowes said: “I’m really pleased to be have secured Adam for at least the next couple of seasons.

“He is a player with masses of potential and has all of the tools required to be a success. His recent performances speak volumes about just how good Adam is.

“He completed his third 80-minute outing last week against Leeds and showed his quality. Adam is the kind of player I like to work with.

“He is very brave and is improving with every minute he plays. I believe he will have a big future in the game, so ensuring he stayed with us was vital.”

I am glad to see a hooker that can play 80 minutes. The recent trend of 2 hookers can affect continuity. You could not drag lowes off the field when he was playing. Coyb.

Outstanding news, I’m sure most, if not all, Bulls supporters welcome this confirmation of Adam signing on. As edmo says, this guy will star for team and Country in the not too distant future.

After so many years in the ‘wilderness’ it feels like we could be on the up and up! COYBs!

This is really great news I have watched Adam improve over the last few years. He has shown he has the eye for scoring from the play the ball when close to the line, one straight out of Jimmy's play book. He is not frightened of getting stuck in and stands no truck when the big guys try ti intimidate him. Come on Mr Donaldson & Mr Addey join the party next year should see the pheonix rising.

It's obviously understandable for players to move for financial reasons but I'd say to Donno that the club has been really supportive through 2 bad injuries and his brother's serious accident, and it would be great to see James show a big chunk of loyalty to the cause and stay put. A move to Wigan would be a short term step up, but in a year's time who knows? We could be on our way back up and the future rewards at Bradford could be excellent. If Addy stayed too we would have the best squad in the championship next year.

Really glad we have signed Obrian for 2 more years. Knuckle down, listen to Jimmy and you'll be 1st choice England hooker very soon (as I posted weeks back and was ridiculed by the troll)
This squad is really coming together now and will take some beating next year-be nice to be back to winning ways after the past few years. I wouldn't be surprised to see the number of season tickets higher than last year despite being in the Championship

Great signing. Like to see Donno, Addy, Pitts and Purtell next. Pity Gale doesn't want to stay and join the party in the Championship.
Keep up the good work Jimmy.
Was worth the trip home for Wigan and especially Leeds games.

We have started to see Players reaching a potential we felt they had, but frustratingly were just not delivering.
Luke Gale for example is shining like never before, others are showing a skill set, and belief that is akin to a strong contender for honours in Super League, not a relegated side preparing for the championship?
All I can say is keep it up the Bulls.
let's show the doubters that they can never destroy our spirit or our belief in our team.

Incidentally congratulations to Leeds for winning the first semi final, that's another ex Bull coaching star, in Brian Mc Dermot.
We must have done something special with all our ex stars who are still a backbone in Super League!
Watch this space is what I say!

A player with great potential who has realised that JL is the best person to develop him as a player.

We need the rest of the squad to either s*** or get off the pot to let us know who is going to be with us next season.

But if you release good news at little intervals it keeps the supporters interested doesn't it? It's called Marketing.

I'm a big believer in having the right 'spine' in a team - the NRL, State of Origin & the Kangaroos have shown how important and effective it is. I feel sure Jimmy Lowes will ensure that we have a 9, 7, 6 and 1 that perform well and provide leadership and motivation on the pitch. Onward and upward next season and, hopefully, a positive finish to the current one
