Bradford City trialists out to impress at Park Avenue

Mo Shariff takes on Blackburn's Connor Mahoney

Bradford's Mo Shariff wins the header against Blackburn's Hyuga Tanner

PHIL Parkinson will use tonight’s hastily-arranged trip to Park Avenue to run the rule over City’s trialist brigade.

The friendly at Horsfall Stadium was only finalised yesterday but it does give the Bantams boss an opportunity to take a look at the wannabes in match action.

Goalkeeper Matt Urwin will get another chance to press his claims as the back-up to Jordan Pickford after playing in the second half against Ossett Town and his former club Blackburn.

Christopher Routis is also lined up for his third outing as he targets the defensive vacancy left by Matt Taylor’s move to Cheltenham.

Striker Mo Shariff was brought on for the closing minutes on Saturday and will be involved again as well as Bermudian Reggie Lambe, who featured at Ossett last Tuesday, and French forward Achille Campion.

Lambe and Campion were both named in the squad at the weekend but were left on the bench.

With only one more friendly to come against Hartlepool next Saturday, Parkinson had been keen to slot in a competitive test for those on trial.

But numbers cannot be swelled by the youth team because they are away in Holland.

Parkinson said: “All the scholars are away so there will be a lot of trialists. But we need to look at them in a game.

“There’s only so much you can pick up from training. It’s important to see them in a match situation.

“If we leave it any longer, it’s going to impact on the season.

“We’ll have the younger pros playing as well – Oliver McBurnie, Lewis Clarkson and Niall Heaton – but the senior lads just need to train.

“Normally in the last week we have a training ground game and we can still do that.”

Campion, who has been playing his recent football in California, has already been at three other clubs in pre-season. He started off at Sheffield Wednesday, then Ipswich and Yeovil – where he scored with a header against Reading.

There will be a cup up for grabs for the winners tonight – the traditional Tom Banks Memorial Trophy. City currently hold it after winning 1-0 a year ago.

City’s apprentices travelled to Holland yesterday on a trip organised by the LFE (League Football Education).

They will play three games against Dutch opposition as well as taking part in a mini-tournament against teams from Sheffield United, Birmingham and Portsmouth on the penultimate day. They travel back a week on Saturday.

* Admission at Avenue tonight is £10 adults, £5 concessions and free for under-16s and armed forces personnel (on production of their warrant card).

WOW we are going to make final decisions on signings based on an hastily arranged friendly against a team 3 leagues below us. Sounds like a well put together plan.

Like other clubs City can still sign players upto the end of August. Last year there was a hastily arranged friendly against Harrogate. No doubt that upset you too. You do come across as rather panicky. Mr. Lawn's warning would apply to you.

Great idea.

That way he could only comment and criticise on his own posts!! ;-)

Peter even chastised Whisky1 who (much to the chagrin of other fans) won't accept barely any criticism of the club, the decisions or communications coming from the boardroom at Valley Parade.

Mind, it did make me chuckle!

What I don't understand is the need for these trialists and thus this match. PP made out yesterday that the board aren't keen on letting him bring in another keeper to sit on the bench; yet continues to 'trial' keepers. According to both Lawn and PP, our loan targets are still available and we are confident we can get them at the end of pre-season/August. So why are we trialling so many players, particularly ones that have little or no experience of the English game?

Surely PP knows who he wants to sign by now and doesn't need to be giving so many trialists a stake? I think it is widely anticipated that PP is looking to bring in another 4/5 players. He knows he needs another keeper, he is likely to be bringing in another defender (to replace Taylor) and another 3 attacking players (which according to all the noises being made, are loanee targets). So why the need to have these latest trialists???

Why not Waynus? May as well see if you can unearth a diamond in the rough - alla Nakhi Wells.

As far as the keeper is concerned we know we need one, PP and the board included - just don't want to pay a first team wage for one. How about get one more experienced and offer a reasonable basic if we can and mega cup bonuses to him in particular. Afterall, its rare that we go that far and we need to get a few rounds and some extra income into the coffers.

Do we really need another defender - they can all cover and we can always pick one up if we get injuries. I would focus on the keeper and 1 or 2 wingers - although I like the idea of playing the ball along the ground and into the final third for shots and pull backs for Hanson to header into the back of the net!
