Steeton Under-17s triumph in game of low scores
Steeton scored a modest 65-5 at Beckfoot in the Upper Airedale Junior Association’s Under-17 League, with Aatif Modak top-scorer on 20 and new boy Harry McGowan on 15 not out.
They were held in check by tight bowling from all the Bingley Congs bowlers.
The chase also proved steady and Daniel Marshall, a Joe Lumb pick this year, remained resolute on 20 in a partnership with Keon Dalladay (19no), but they were unable to score quickly enough and fell short by six runs.
Opener Martin Walker chipped in 24 but the loss of four wickets pegged them back.
A terrific unbeaten stand of 71 from Gibreal Malik (46) and Will Grace (23) propelled their final tally to a daunting 130-4.
The Abbotts’ batting was soon under pressure, and with six ducks in their innings defeat was inevitable.
Alex Moon scored 18 and a late 23 from Benji Sealey gave them some respectability at 52. Anish Pulavarti (3-5) and Matthew Sharp (2-3) did most damage.
Opener Lewis Hopkinson grasped the nettle, and his 42 not out led his team to the points at 73-1 with 16 balls in hand.
An impressive 3-19 from Sam Mitchell had held up their ambitions.
Wilsden’s batting proved to be a one-man affair, with 43 going to the stylish Junaid Jamshed.
An all-round excellent Gargrave bowling attack gave little to the visitors, who fell short by 17 runs at 69-4.
Oakworth found the immaculate lines of the Dales bowlers difficult to get away and finished 19 runs short at 78, Keighley taking 4-10.
