SIR - The letter of Judith Cummins MP (T&A, June 25) is a very welcome endorsement of the view of the Queensbury Tunnel Society that Highways England (HE) are being bullishly hasty in their intention to abandon Queensbury Tunnel.

Bradford Council are currently investigating the viability of the tunnel and need more time to do so. It seems to us that HE’s claim that the tunnel’s condition poses an increasing risk to the community is misleading, to say the least. There is absolutely no justification on safety grounds for their drive to plug the tunnel with concrete in September this year.

This is disgraceful scaremongering by a government agency who are hell-bent on spending millions of pounds of public money to destroy a heritage feature that has an important role to play Bradford’s active travelling future. Come on people of Yorkshire! It’s time to blow this scandal open.
