SIR - I am asthmatic, never smoked cigarettes and am continually praised by my GP for not doing so!
I’m in broad agreement with the T&A editorial that the message on smoking has to hit home, but the family spending survey, released by the Office for National Statistics, states householders spend less on alcohol and tobacco falling by a third in the last decade, so the message that smoking kills is getting through.
In the budget the Chancellor froze beer and tobacco duty but according to my neighbours that hasn’t stopped some shops from putting 20p on a price of fags, and some pubs putting 10p on a pint.
