SIR - In response to Richard Sheard’s good point about pavement parking (‘What about vehicles parking on pavements?’, Letters, March 4), I’m not the only person who has noticed an ever-increasing number of pavement parkers and pavement cyclists in the last few years.

Firstly with cyclists, it’s getting more mainstream than ever to see cyclists ride on pavements, completely unchallenged, to the point that I Googled to see if it had been legalised recently or if it was still illegal under UK law, to have it confirmed that, yes, it is still illegal and carries a maximum £500 fine or £50 on-the-spot fine.

Then with the drivers, it seems to be a free for all and anything goes, double yellow lines are just ignored, bus routes are regularly blocked on suburban streets, cars and vans regularly park on at least half of the pavement space and also block pedestrians’ views of busy roads.

This is one good way where our more-than- ample surveillance systems could look out for such public annoyances and fine such individuals. It’s not like our economy doesn’t need the extra money.
