SIR - A Bradford first! Bradford Council is the first to approve a waste incinerator in a valley (T&A, February 10).

The result is that Airedale is to host a dangerous experiment creating toxic emissions in a valley bottom.

The developers refer to eleven working plants; irrelevant, unless they too are in similar locations. Besides, it takes a generation to assess the full impact on health.

Why was information from Bradford Council about the implications of what was being planned so hard to come by? Airedale residents, even councillors in adjacent wards, remained unaware.

This is no way to encourage investment in Keighley by firms that might actually bring real jobs and prosperity to the region. Is this the Northern Powerhouse?

Clearly a higher authority needs to look behind Bradford Council’s bland assertion that the benefits of the scheme outweigh the ‘identified harm’.

What genuine attempts have been made to identify harm? How can you weigh risks to human health against so-called benefits? But this is not a balancing of weights and measures.

The Secretary of State for Local Government can still overturn the decision. You can appeal to him directly or through your MP.
