SIR - Britain is currently in the weak position where we are having to scrabble around looking for new trade deals to replace what will be lost, after we leave the EU.

This explains why Theresa May flew out so quickly to the USA then meekly allowed President Trump to grab her hand during a photo opportunity. It was the reason why later, when asked, she refused to condemn President Trump for banning Muslims from entering the USA. Belatedly, the Government did later put out a statement condemning the President’s action.

Then, after she visited Turkey to meet President Erdogan, a new £100 million deal to sell that country British fighter jets was announced. This despite Mr Erdogan’s recent poor record on human rights and the actions of Turkey, aimed at Kurds both within and outside the country.

Is this the future for Britain? Are we going to hold our noses, close our eyes and ears, hold out our hands (and wash them afterwards) as we make deals with countries, whose leaders we know are doing wrong, but then just mumble a few feeble words of disagreement later?
