SIR – Re the article in the T&A (October 2) about the young chap wishing to enlist in the Royal Navy. The solution to the issue of how he fills in his time usefully until his braces are ready to be removed would appear to me to be straightforward.
Before deciding he would like a career in the Navy, the would-be recruit was probably at school and in receipt of some financial support which he has now had to forfeit, and obviously the lad will not relish being a non-earning member of his family.
It seems that through no fault of his own, he was belatedly informed by the naval authorities that the braces were an impediment to his enlistment – and this has now placed him among the unemployed. Surely this should be taken into account if he were to appeal to the appropriate education department for a short-term reinstatement at his old school until he is eligible to be accepted in the forces. Such a solution would thus offer him a small source of income and a means of existing until then.
