TOO often, we hear or read reports about young people that are slanted in a negative way.

So it is fantastic to be able to report on the excellent work of members of the 1st Bingley Scouts group who did so much to help people in the wake of the Boxing Day floods.

The nature of media means it is often bad news that makes the headlines, but here at the Telegraph & Argus we try and ensure positive stories like this are also given the coverage they deserve.

And it is a mark of just how significant a role these young people played in helping the town cope after the devastating floods that Chief Scout Bear Grylls has publicly praised them.

The group used its headquarters on Sycamore Avenue as a centre for the community volunteers in the Bingley Flood Support Group, and many members joined their efforts.

The work of these scouts is a real credit to young people and should act as an inspiration.

All too often, our young people are berated for their ignorance, their anti-social behaviour, and their lack of concern for others.

There are occasions when the stereotype may have some element of truth, but often, they are typecast before they can even open their mouths.

The work of these Scouts and Guides in helping this community shows that the true nature of most young people is compassionate and caring.

That is something worth bearing in mind the next time we rush to judge groups of young people.
