The issue of traffic going up and down Haworth’s famous Main Street is a difficult one, but one that has to be tackled.

There are businesses and homes on the historic cobbled street that need access for vehicles, but as anyone who uses it regularly knows, there can be traffic issues.

Conflict with pedestrians, obstruction by parked cars, and traffic travelling in opposite directions meeting can all cause difficulties and potential dangers.

Bradford Council has confirmed it will be bringing in some sort of restricted parking zone orders, although it has not put out any details yet.

But it is clear something needs to be done, with the issue of people parking inconsiderately first raised two years ago by Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Council.

Incidents have included deliveries being held up, access to the parish church restricted, and even funeral corteges being interrupted.

It seems likely that some sort of new parking order will be brought in, but it has to be done with consideration to the access needs of businesses and homes.

Perhaps a more radical consideration could also be making the street one way. This would certainly help reduce conflicts of cars and trade vehicles, and would also make it easier for the increasing number of pedestrians who walk up and down this historic street.

It is important to remember that this is a functioning street, with deliveries and access needed, but many far more commercial streets in towns and city centres manage to bring restrictions in without causing total disruption.

Hopefully, we can see something similar being brought in here.
