SIR – It is always interesting to read the ramblings of Mr Hall when he decides to give us the benefit of his views.

He raves about ‘socialists’ when I think he would find it as hard to find a socialist in the Labour Party in Parliament as he would a fascist in the Conservative Party.

He seems, in suggesting that anyone who opposes the present Government is looking back to 19th century sweat shops rather than at the current state of affairs, to ignore the fact that the financial gap between the top ten per cent and the rest of the population is, without dispute, widening.

While I would agree with him that it has been a mistake of almost all post-war governments to think that light regulation was the best for the banking system, it is unreasonable to suggest that the last Labour Government was any more relaxed about it than their predecessors.

Likewise, house price inflation has been a result of policy dating back to before Mrs Thatcher became Prime Minister.

I note that Mr Hall makes no comment about his own party’s role in the Coalition; presumably taking advantage of the line that if they were not in government, the situation would be much worse, rather than taking any responsibility for the policies enacted – a line which Nick Clegg hoped he had mastered until ridiculed on YouTube.
