SIR – The figures released concerning child poverty in Bradford make chilling reading (T&A, September 17). Unfortunately, as even further benefits cuts are scheduled by this Government, I regret to predict that things will invariably get worse.
What is doubly sad is the fact that the proceeds from these savage benefits and public service cuts are being diverted, firstly, to support the banks that caused all the problems in the first place, and secondly, into the pockets of the wealthiest ten per cent as tax breaks.
The Government has used the financial meltdown of 2008 to justify this budget savagery, but the truth is they would have done it anyway. Tories by their very nature represent only the very wealthiest in our society and it follows that those institutions like the NHS and the welfare state are simply beyond their comprehension. So if a public service cannot be turned into a profit-making venture – for their friends – it is gone.
It is my long-held view that only individuals earning in excess of £150K pa can possibly justify voting Tory. Anyone else, has an over-inflated view of their own importance, or is just plain selfish (or both).
