SIR – Re Councillor Warnes’s letter, ‘See the bigger picture’ (T&A, September 11). We very much see the bigger picture, Saltaire is of such importance it is listed as a World Heritage Site and Conservation Area.
Both Saltaire Village Society and the Friends of Roberts Park had unanimous votes from a quorum of members to oppose.
Neither SVS or FORP have ambition beyond the welfare of Saltaire.
In FORP’s constitution it says we are to “act as advocates for the park, to safeguard Roberts Park for future generations”.
FORP’s omission from the Council’s feasibility study as a “key stakeholder” is yet to be properly addressed by officers. We were considered key stakeholders throughout the Heritage lottery bid.
Coun Warnes claims 80 per cent of local people are in favour of this scheme. I presume he is referring to the flawed questionnaire during the brief consultation.
We are only just starting to hear both sides of the debate, so far those in favour have “shouted loudest”.
We believe this project is squandering precious Council resources at a time of great austerity and cutbacks. But at what cost to Saltaire, a site of international importance?
Sharon Ashton, Chairman of The Friends of Roberts Park, Edward Street, Saltaire
