SIR – I have to agree with Rob Higgie, secretary of Baildon Conservatives, when he says (T&A, September 11) that a Parish Council by-election in Baildon is an expensive and needless waste of taxpayers’ money.

The common sense move would obviously be to co-opt someone on to the Council on a temporary basis rather than expend funds mid-term.

Indeed, it also seems ridiculous that a mere ten people can trigger a Parish Council by-election, and consequently cause a spend of maybe £10,000, which is a quarter of the annual budget.

Lib Dem candidate Ian Lyons may well say that the petition was nothing to do with him, but it is a pity that he saw fit to put up for office in this interim period rather than wait until the next normal elections are due.

His attempted justification of the situation (T&A, September 13) is noted, but did nothing to other than confirm the utter waste of money involved.
