SIR – Mr Murphy in his letter (T&A, September 8) castigates the last Labour government for introducing the ‘work capability assessments’. I could not agree more. I was actually referring to the fact that good old Atos have recently won yet another £400m Government contract.

This time, to assess the former Disability Living Allowance which the Government aim to replace with a Personal Independence Payment (which is to say, they aim to cut it – severely) Of course, to refer to the former government as a ‘Labour’ government at all, is a bit of a liberty. They were actually a bunch of bourgeois smart apples that hijacked the Labour party and turned it roughly in the direction of the US Democratic Party. Indeed, Blair was a great devotee of Bill Clinton.

The point I was trying to make in my letter was that the equality and treatment of disabled people in this country owes just about everything to former Labour governments, including the last one, which, though appalling when compared to many of its forebears, was still a country mile better than any Tory government.
