SIR – In the recent Olympics, Yorkshire competitors won more medals than most countries.

This gave immense publicity to towns and cities in Yorkshire during these troubled times. Places like Leeds, Sheffield, Hull, Huddersfield, Otley , Hebden Bridge and Northallerton were given a huge lift.

Just a minute. There’s one place missing.

Why is Bradford not following the lead of others in inspiring its young people?

Come on, Bradford Council, help our youngsters to achieve great things at future Olympics.

Cycling and rowing are already well covered, but we could do athletic field events.

Some of these events – hammer, discus, high jump and pole vault – we never do well in. Others we achieve occasional success.

Bradford Council should contact the athletics governing body for advice. They would be only too pleased to help Bradford get more medals in the future. They would help with planning the facilities, coaching and administration, and also get Lottery funding for the project.

These events, along with others, could also be introduced into schools.

So, come on, Bradford. Jump to it, throw your hat in the ring, and run with the rest of Yorkshire. Maybe at future Games, others will marvel at Bradford’s success.
