SIR – The letter from Philip Bird (T&A, August 4) suggests sections of the M62 should be closed to all traffic until the roadworks are completed. I see he lives in Shipley , nowhere near a motorway, but near a railway station which could be used instead of queueing in traffic jams.

We in South Bradford don’t have any stations at all, so we have to use our cars instead and the M62 is a vital link for us.

There are people living in all areas around Bradford who may work in Leeds but cannot use the trains. I drive a van and use the M62 to get to various places. I can use other roads to get round the roadworks, but so do quite a lot of others and we also have to endure countless traffic lights.

Closing sections completely would be “hell on earth” for everyone. Besides, it’s already too late to do that now.

The accident on July 25 closed the west-bound carriageway at Chain Bar up to nine hours. I was coming from Barnsley, came off the M1 at Junction 41, through Dewsbury and so did everyone else wanting to get towards Huddersfield and beyond.

You don’t close sections, but the planners should have cordoned off one mile, got on with the job then moved onto the next mile and so on until all work completed.

This work is going on till 2013. A crazy plan to use hard shoulder as a fourth lane, it won’t work. Where do you go when you break down? It’s already been proved to cause tailbacks.
