SIR – I had hoped to enjoy the Olympic flame event at the weekend, but due to somebody’s oversight, I endured it. Why? Because somebody didn’t think ahead and lower the height of the water fountain nearest the walkway barricade due to the blustery weather, that’s why! I, and many others, were drenched even before the flame arrived. If they could not have lowered that particular fountain’s height, surely they could have put the barriers even one metre nearer the walkway; doing so would have prevented most of the water from drenching us – they would have known during the setting up that people standing there were going to get wet. Lots of people around me were making similar comments. Maybe somebody from that particular department will read this letter and remember its content the next time there is an event in Centenary Square in windy weather.
