SIR – As soon as I read R Hobson’s letter (T&A, May 3) commenting on John Anderson’s letter (T&A, May 1) I was tempted to paraphrase a recent US President and reply: “It’s the environment, stupid!”.

Wind turbines are not about money and who makes a profit from them. They are about what we are doing to the planet we live on.

Many people worry about inheritance tax. They should look at our carbon footprint as a very grave inheritance tax on what we bequeath to future generations. Their beauty may not be apparent to many, but they are no more ugly than pylons which we have accepted for almost a century.

When we have developed other forms of renewable energy, wind turbines can be removed and will leave behind no scars, no spoil heaps, no radioactive hulks.

R Hobson should know that a turbine is proposed for Baildon Moor which may well be visible from John Anderson’s back yard.
