SIR – Only when someone wants to be elected as an MP or as a councillor do we ever see them except on a portrait on an election leaflet put through our letter boxes. Once they are elected, that’s the last we see of them, unless you happen to still have hope and attend an MP’s surgery or contact a councillor.

It is only when the political parties are shocked by a renegade like George Galloway, who has such an oratory skill that he made the US Congress look foolish when he argued his case successfully when he was asked to do so in front of them.

Our political leaders are so amazed someone had the temerity to upset their applecart and win against their expectations. They then appear en masse in the city for a couple of days to try and find out what went wrong with their political machine.

We could do with a phalanx of George Galloway individuals to bring our vanished democracy back again.
