SIR – It is impossible not to feel sorry for bank staff at the old Yorkshire Bank (owned now by the National Bank of Australia).
The Dominion banks (Australia, Canada and New Zealand), through better regulation and management, did not fall prey to the lunatic mistakes of European and North American banks, but the taxpayer-rescue of failing banks has put them on the dole.
We now have artificially-low interest rates, crippling savers and pensioners so bank executives continue to draw salaries which the rest of us can only wonder at.
