SIR – It was good to see that the Commons cross-party select committee came to the decision that Rupert Murdoch is ‘not a fit person’ to hold executive office.

Because of his imperialistic grip on a vast swathe of media organisations, politicians have always had to curry favour with Murdoch, so that Murdoch, in turn, would endorse their political party at election time. This outrageous toadying has been going on, perfectly openly, in this country for almost 40 years.

In addition, it is common knowledge that every low, salacious trick in the book has been used to attract readers to his tabloid papers, whereupon the reader is bombarded with gutter journalism, pin-ups and (at election time) a none-too-subtle message to vote for whichever political party will roll over to the demands of Murdoch Almighty. Thankfully, all that is behind us now and we can look to a new dawn of democracy in this country.

But wait a minute! You say that the Tories on the select committee refused to endorse the opinions of the Labour and Liberal members – and the decision of the committee is only a majority decision? Oh well, best get the grovelling mats out again. Christopher Hindle, Osterley Grove, Bradford
