SIR – John Wilson was wrong to say in his letter (T&A, April 25) that the Titanic sank on April 14, 1912. It was at 2.20am, Monday, April 15, and two-and-a-half hours after it collided with an iceberg, that the liner slid to the Atlantic floor.

And although the British inquiry concluded the iceberg caused the disaster, there was consensus among many of those present, after hearing statements from nearly 100 witnesses, that the greatest calamity in maritime history was simply down to bad seamanship.
