SIR – Now that spring is here and threats of snow and ice are declining and the birds are singing cheerfully, I find myself longing for the return of double summertime.

Some of your readers may recall that we once had the chance to save electricity or gas by enjoying outdoor pastimes after the day’s work; playing games or walking or gardening or even washing and drying garments outdoors.

Extra hours of daylight for many of us may cause problems for early drivers of goods vehicles and other early birds, but the benefits for the normal citizens and country dwellers.

The early bird catches the germs.
