SIR – I am sure all campaigners in the Bradford West by-election – of whatever party – will join me in expressing condolences and sympathy to the family of Mohammad Abu-bakr Rauf who collapsed and died while working in the city ward on Tuesday, March 20.
It is typical of his dedication to humanitarian causes that just before his collapse he and I were discussing what action could be taken in support of Hana Al-Shalabi, on hunger strike for more than 30 days in protest at her detention without trial in an Israeli jail.
As chairman of Bradford Palestine Solidarity Campaign, he and his committee were responsible for organising two important events last month in celebration of International Women’s Day, at one of which Bradford’s Lord Mayor, Naveeda Ikram, welcomed a Palestinian woman to the city as part of a tour of West Yorkshire.
He will be sadly missed, but I am sure that all those left behind will dedicate themselves anew to the causes for which he worked so assiduously.
