While the Budget is not traditionally a time for celebration, generally putting, as it does, more strain on our pockets, one announcement from the Chancellor yesterday is very good news for Bradford.

As part of a joint bid with Leeds, Bradford is to receive funding through the Urban Broadband Fund to increase internet speeds to the two authority areas by up to ten times.

Even for those of us who do not feel that the online world is a huge part of our lives, this is an incredibly important announcement which will have positive effects for both business and ordinary people.

The internet is part of modern life now, and those districts which can boast the most switched-on approach to digital matters will lead the field when it comes to presenting themselves as an attractive proposition for new businesses to start up in and relocate to.

Local firms will be able to work more fluidly and quickly online, and the promise of wireless coverage across the city centre will be an important draw for visitors – especially coupled with the City Park which opens this weekend.

The world today is all about connectivity, and if Bradford can boast one of the best digital networks in Europe, which this “Super-Connected Cities” project promises, then it will be well-placed to deliver growth and jobs.

Across Bradford and Leeds, more than 88,000 homes will also be able to benefit from the increased broadband speeds, making the region a more attractive place to live in an increasingly online society.

We now look forward to seeing real progress and quick action to put the benefits of this money into making a difference.
