SIR – I agree that fly-tipping is an inexcusable blight on the district.
However, Bradford Council, because of their inflexible collection policy, must bear some responsibility for this.
We wanted to dispose of a sofa recently. But the Council would not give us a fixed time and date for collection.
Instead, we were told to leave the sofa in our front garden for a period of seven to ten days. But the sight of unwanted bulky items dumped in a garden is unsightly, and householders are very unwilling to do this if they take pride in where they live. Why not introduce a system of paying online or over the phone for disposal in advance of a fixed date collection, with the sum non-refundable if the house is unoccupied when the rubbish collectors call?
