SIR – Judge Jonathan Rose’s incomprehension at a sign announcing “slippery when wet” not yet being erected on the notorious A629 is beyond my own limited ability to comprehend.

How an apparently intelligent man can actually believe that such a sign will prevent further accidents is something I would find rather amusing if it wasn’t for its seriousness.

Is my learned friend aware that most surfaces are rather more slippery when wet than they are when dry?

The reason this road has a reputation for accidents is because people drive down it like maniacs.

I wonder what the judge thinks of that part of the road which carries a 60mph speed limit — at the sharp bend on a very steep gradient?

I suspect no-one has been injured here as yet, but when an accident occurs there will no doubt be some expert giving their verdict.
