SIR – I can assure bus service campaigner Ian Brewer that Metro is not, as he says, “putting profit before people” (T&A, October 8). We are a public body co-ordinating bus services; we make no money from them.
We do, however, provide funding for many important bus journeys and services which would not otherwise run because the companies that operate them do not consider them profitable.
Metro has spent more than £20m each year supporting these journeys, but is now having to review the level of support it gives as a result of disproportionate Government cuts, in the order of £500 million in funding to the five West Yorkshire districts.
This review is looking at achieving the best value for local council tax-payers, while at the same time maintaining those services which monitoring shows are being used.
People have until the end of tomorrow to get involved through Metro’s website at wymetro.com/busreview. We will then review the feedback and advise people early next year of what changes, scheduled to take effect in April 2012, are planned.
Councillor James Lewis, chairman, Metro
