SIR – Had Mr Bird (Letters, October 4) read my offering with more of an open mind, he would have seen that my venom is not specifically directed at Tory politicians.

I see this particular shower as little more than the latest in a long line of fawning facilitators to global capitalism. My target is exclusively the banks.

That being said, however, he will recall that it was the delightful Mrs Thatcher (under the Svengali-like influence of Keith Joseph) who was the prime mover for promoting this despicable new order in the UK. She was fundamental in dismantling the UK manufacturing base in favour of an ever-expanding financial services sector.

Thereafter of course, we have had a long run of governments (allegedly of both stripes) who are quite prepared to grovel on the floor for the bankers, in exchange for their deigning to use London as the centre of their dubious and often, criminal, operations.

My task, therefore, is simply to question how any politician (bearing in mind what happened in 2008) can justify allowing these greedy, repugnant, self-styled ‘Masters of the Universe’ to always call the tune – and in so doing, lead the world economy towards inevitable collapse (especially, those politicians blessed with the benefit of hindsight).
