SIR – How many people realise that their household gas and electricity bills are £200 a year higher than they should be because of subsidies paid to wealthy suppliers of renewable energy, such as useless wind farms?

These wind farms, which the green lobby so slavishly believes in, are the most inefficient, most unreliable, most expensive form of energy imaginable.

A large part of the time, these monstrous eyesores are only working at a fraction of their full capacity, or they are standing idle, for which we have to pay the owners even more money.

They don’t work when there is no wind. They are turned off when winds are too high. They don’t work when it freezes. In cold conditions, usually accompanied by high pressure and no wind, the turbines will not turn, just when we need them most!

When these monsters are not working, we need traditional power stations to back them up. Much of this extra requirement comes from France, who produce their electricity from nuclear reactors. Just how ridiculous is that?

In 20 years’ time, when we are having blackouts and have bankrupted ourselves by slavishly following unworkable Green ideals, we will wish we had nuclear power.
