SIR – Paul Donnelly thinks that those calling for a law change to make the wearing of crash helmets compulsory for quad bikers are killjoys (Letters, July 28).
Bradford-born Barbara Castle (pictured), controversial Minister for Transport in the Sixties, introduced a 70mph speed limit and the breathalyser test, so no doubt in the eyes of Mr Donnelly she, too, was a killjoy.
Doesn’t he realise that even careful drivers get involved in road accidents and it is incumbent on governments to find ways of protecting those involved from serious injury or worse. It is better to be safe than sorry.
