SIR – In his defence of the decision to close Manningham Pool, Chris Evans (Letters, August 1) seems to be taking the Council’s figures at face value. But as I showed in the disregarded submission to the Bradford Executive, these figures are unreliable.
He speaks of subsidies for swimmers. Well, of course they are subsidised, like all facilities where health rather than profit is the primary concern. And yes, at a time when social services are under attack from an unholy alliance of the bankers and the LibDem-Tory coalition, some uncomfortable choices may have to be made.
Ian Greenwood promised that education would be protected.
But the Council’s own figures (not considered by the Executive) show that closure of the pool will cost 11 schools some £5,000 a year each, so an uncomfortable choice has indeed been made: to attack the health of Manningham schoolchildren and at the same time to cut school budgets in real terms!
