SIR – Reading that teachers calling in sick because of rising stress levels and increased workloads have been major factors in a £10.3 million bill for supply staff in Bradford (T&A, July 18), made me realise what a stalwart bunch my tutors must have been during the Second World War.
At that time, many teachers were conscripted and it was nigh on impossible to get replacements, so the remaining staff had to deal with many extra pupils at every lesson to ensure there was no lapse in their education.
Classes were large and facilities over-stretched, but nevertheless they coped. So why can’t today’s teaching fraternity?
“In times of stress it’s always best to keep busy and plough your energy into something positive” (Lee Iacocca, American businessman).
