SIR - I read with horror the story about the baby girl Bethany Cope being injured as the train doors closed on her pushchair on the train from Bingley to Leeds (T&A, September 2).
I regularly travel on the Airedale line from Saltaire with my baby girl in a pushchair and I think this is becoming all too common an occurrence. It has nearly happened to me more than once.
I recently overheard a train conductor telling a passenger that the train operator is fined for every minute the train runs late. If this is correct, then it may explain why conductors seem to try and get people on and off the trains too quickly.
However, this is no excuse for negligence on the part of the conductor and they should all receive retraining in safe operation of train doors.
If necessary the train timetables should be altered to allow extra time for passengers with pushchairs and/or wheelchairs to get on and off.
We are all being encouraged to use public transport instead of cars but this type of incident will have the opposite effect.
