SIR – The latest Council proposals are not the ultimate panacea, as traffic will only be slowed and will continue to increase, as now, with far more commercial and heavier vehicles through the rat-runs.
We don’t want traffic calming, we want traffic-free streets through our residential areas. If there were no rat-runs, then drivers would have to cope with the existing road network. So, close off the runs.
Many vehicles on the A650 from the Bingley direction avoid Saltaire by cutting through Bankfield Drive/Road, Nab Wood Grove, Ashfield Road, up Moorhead and left on Avondale to rejoin Bradford Rd. Others from Bingley and the bypass go straight up Bankfield Road, into Nab Wood Drive and exit to Cottingley Cliffe Road. so as to miss the Bankfield roundabout and Cottingley.
I suggest the following: Make New Close Road. and Nab Lane ‘No Entry’ from the A650 and make access to the A650 a ‘Right Turn Only’, closing off the left turn to Bingley.
In Saltaire, close off vehicular access from Albert Road to Shirley, Titus and Caroline Streets, which will stop runners through to Saltaire Road.
Access for pedestrians and cyclists would be preserved in all cases and some peace, quiet and less pollution would make the few extra minutes on a journey well worth it.
