SIR – Whatever people may think about Jack Macpherson’s rose-coloured spectacles, no-one can doubt that he fights the city’s corner with splendid enthusiasm and dogged determination.

Without doubt, if we had another 100,000 like him in Bradford, the city wouldn’t be where it is now.

Sadly, though, Mr A Bailey’s somewhat vitriolic remarks (Letters, February 5) are much nearer the mark, although not regarding Ilkley’s postal determination – it is already blessed with a Leeds postcode.

I certainly do not derive any satisfaction whatsoever from the appalling status my city has sunk to.

I’m just glad that my parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents aren’t around to see what 21st century Bradford has become.
