SIR – Is Bradford’s Playhouse Theatre the city’s best-kept secret?

I recently came to Bradford to see The Demeter. I know the city well enough, and with hindsight I should have found out where the venue was beforehand. Arriving by train at 7pm for a 7.45pm production, I discovered that none of the city centre maps or signs indicated that the venue even existed.

As I couldn’t get the Playhouse to answer the telephone, I asked people for directions resulting in a wild goose chase. I was told by locals that the venue was next to the job centre, near the post office, by the parish church, beyond Foster Square and past the Alhambra. A hotel receptionist couldn’t help me and someone even sent me onto Manningham Lane.

Someone directed me to Cineworld and a lady sent me onto Leeds Road. But just yards from the Playhouse, I was directed to the Cathedral, and another local sent me back into the city centre.

I’d given up on seeing the production and I stopped asking for directions as it seemed pointless. Determined to find the venue, however, I walked the streets of Bradford and almost by accident I finally found the Playhouse at precisely 8.36pm.
